Litecontrol introduces the first Cradle to Cradle Certified architectural lighting fixtures

file Litecontrol is pleased to announce that it has earned the Cradle to Cradle Silver Certification from McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) for its entire product line of architectural lighting fixtures. MBDC is the collaboration between renowned architect William McDonough and pioneering chemist Dr. Michael Braungart, and their Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Design process is an innovative approach to sustainability that addresses the human and environmental health impacts of products.

“We are very pleased that our products have achieved the C2C Certification from MBDC,” said Veda Ferlazzo Clark, President and CEO of Litecontrol. “This certification was the next logical step in our long-term commitment to the principles of environmental stewardship and sustainability, and provides external verification of our position in leading the lighting industry into a more sustainable way of doing business.”

Achieving Cradle to Cradle Certification involved a detailed review of the products, processes, and policies of Litecontrol. The C2C rating system includes an assessment of five categories: the human and ecological health impacts of the materials used in the products, the extent to which materials are reutilized, the energy characterizations of the manufacturing processes, the water stewardship exhibited by the manufacturer, and the corporate policies related to social responsibility. “The assessment process was incredibly thorough,” according to Bob Thomas, Vice President of Product Development and Engineering at Litecontrol, “and involved not only us but many of our vendors as well. MBDC evaluated all the materials that go into our fixtures and helped us to identify ways that we can reduce the impacts of our products.”

Litecontrol’s ability to offer the first C2C Certified lighting fixtures helps architects achieve their sustainable design objectives and advances the goals of building owners pursuing green certification programs. For example, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has included C2C Certification in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, through the Innovation in Design credits. “We are pleased to be the first Cradle to Cradle Certified lighting manufacturer and proud to be associated with the manufacturers from other industries that have already achieved this rating from MBDC.” says Brian Golden, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Litecontrol. “C2C Certification provided a framework for Litecontrol to ensure we are ‘walking the talk’ of sustainability. For our customers, C2C Certification provides the opportunity for an additional LEED credit, and an assurance that they are associated with a manufacturer that shares their commitment to sustainable building.”

For Litecontrol, C2C Certification was the next logical step in its evolution. “Because our two factories are located in small communities in Massachusetts, Litecontrol has always been concerned with how our business practices impact our neighbors,” Veda Ferlazzo Clark emphasized. “Today’s principles of sustainability mean that we have to take a very broad view of those impacts and of our neighborhood. Cradle to Cradle enables us to think and act across our entire business to become a more sustainable manufacturer.”
