Litecontrol: a Green Company |
|
Litecontrol endorses Sustainable Design practices through the development of high-performance, energy-efficient lighting systems that meet the qualitative needs of the visual environment with the least impact on the physical environment. Through continuous monitoring and improvement, the Company is committed to the use of environmentally favorable materials, design and manufacturing processes, packaging and transportation methods, installation and maintenance procedures, and disposal and recycling programs.
Environmental Practices
The following items include many of the environmental concerns and related actions that Litecontrol Corporation addresses within its operations.
- All scrap steel is recycled and returned through licensed reclaimers for eventual reuse by steel manufacturers. This includes scrap, which is a normal by-product of our manufacturing process as well as any that may be generated through the disassembly of fixtures returned from the field.
- Scrap aluminum is also collected and sent to reclaimers for reuse.
- A container recycling program includes paint drums, corrugated cardboard and other packaging materials
- Our Ransburg wet paint line was converted many years ago to utilize only high-solids paint, thus reducing the use and emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) by more than 90%. Recovery and reuse of clean-up solvents was an important part of this effort. During this same period our shipments of products increased by more than 100%.
- We have installed two high volume automated powder coating finishing facilities (which produce no VOC’s and no hazardous wastes) for use with products, which are typically high-production products and have been designed with this finishing technique in mind.
- Replaced prewash system and paint bake oven to reduce energy consumption and VOC emissions.
- In addition to this overall reduction in VOC’s, we have reduced our use of so-called TURA (Toxic Use Reduction Act) chemicals to the point where we have fallen below the EPA-mandated reporting threshold for the past four years.
- Installed rinse water recycle system for painting and welding operations to eliminate all water discharges.
- At one of our facilities we own and operate a private portable water system to which a $75,000 purification system has recently been added. We have installed main line back-flow preventers for the protection of the public water system at the facility, which has public water available. Both of these items are maintained and inspected annually by licensed water works professionals.
- All lighting throughout both of our facilities has been replaced with fixtures/lamp/ballast combinations of the highest efficiency, which are suitable for the functions performed within each space.
- Most of the older, inefficient heating systems in both facilities have removed and replaced with modern high-efficiency systems, and we have converted from heavy-oil burners to all natural gas fired units, which have significantly lower environmental concerns.
- Installed a 150K BTU high efficiency boiler and optimizing controls to replace a 1M BTU process heat boiler for plant space heating, along with replacing entire steam and condensate system to reduce heat loss.
- Replaced all building roofs, adding insulation board to reduce space heating load.
- Both facilities are located in somewhat rural areas where municipal sanitary waste disposal systems are not available. Within the past three years we’ve replaced an outmoded septic system with a state-of-the-art FAST treatment system at a cost of more than $200,000.
- Our facilities, equipment, production processes are in full compliance with all applicable federal and state environmental regulations. We are subject to, and frequently experience, unannounced inspections by the local, state and federal authorities in this field.
