Libraries are busier than ever, and 23 states have approved local library building measures. According to
American Libraries, the internet is not a substitute for the library: not many substantive materials are available for free; 50,000 academic titles are published every year and few are digitized; journals carry only 12 months of back issues on-line. People go to the library for research, for a quiet respite, to read a
book, or for social activities such as reading groups. And, computers can be anywhere in the library.
